:: MLA Installed Base Continues to Grow in South Africa

The demand for automated mineralogy in South Africa continues to be strong. Australian minerals technology provider JKTech and its strategic hardware partner FEI Company, have just commissioned a second MLA system at South Africa’s leading mineral processing and metallurgical engineering products and service provider Mintek.

From Mintek’s Manager of the Mineralogy Division Amanda Quadling; “Mintek is pleased to have up and running a new Mineral Liberation Analyser on a Quanta 600 system in the Mineralogy Division. This instrument will allow increased uranium industry service work and mineralogical research, and was made possible by funding commitment by the Medium Term Expenditure Framework of the SA Treasury. Mintek Mineralogy is building a strong local capacity around automated-SEM technology and uses regular dialogue with JKTech and FEI to ensure that the boundaries for this technology continue to be pushed within a commodity climate where low grade / complex ores are the focus of much attention."

Orders for further MLA systems have been received from the Geology Department at the University of Johannesburg and from long-term MLA customer Anglo Platinum. These upcoming MLA system deliveries will be University of Johannesburg’s second MLA and bring Anglo Platinum’s total number of MLA systems up to 14. Repeat orders from valued customers represent a confirmation in the ability of the JKTech/FEI team to deliver continued product improvements and hence ongoing value to the minerals industry (including its academic community) in South Africa.

JKTech Managing Director Dr Geoff Gault made this comment, “South Africa has always been a very important market for the MLA technology, with JKTech’s first commercial MLA sale going to Anglo Platinum way back in 2000. It’s particularly satisfying to know that 8 years later the MLA continues to be in high demand, maintaining its market leading position with 20 MLA systems operating in South Africa by the end of 2008. JKTech attributes this to our ongoing dedication to product improvement and innovation plus our system delivery partnership with FEI and its global network. This combination is ensuring the MLA remains the industry leader in modern automated mineralogy technology”.
