:: Slag Cells at Union

Metso Minerals has installed 17 Reactor Cell System (RCS) flotation cells at Anglo American Platinum Corp. Ltd's Mortimer concentrator, part of the company's Union section.

The units were specified by Hatch Africa on behalf of Anglo Platinum. According to Metso, the units have been locally designed and manufactured, and consist of seven RCS 30 HDs, six RCS 10 HDs and four RCS 5 XHDs. Metso's process manager, Paul Gallagher, said: "Since the introduction of the technology, some four years ago, these cells have proven their worth within the platinum mining industry . . . the company has more than 300 units operating in the field and 40 of these were installed at Mortimer's concentrator plant during 2001/2002 performing rougher/scavenger duties at the UG2 plant.

Metso says that one of the most important features of the new units is a patented deep-vane mechanism impeller consisting of an arrangement of vertical vanes with shaped lower edges and an air dispersion shelf, which enables powerful radial slurry pumping to the cell wall. The cells are designed to pump abrasive froths and, according to Metso, this was an important design criteria for Hatch Africa when it made its selection.
