:: Mintek Unleashes Mine Waste Water Treatment Technologies

Mintek hosted a three-day technology showcase to demonstrate technological revolutionary processes developed to treat solid and waste water at the Mintek Technology Demonstration site in Randfontein recently.

The site, open to the media, learners and industry partners, provided a platform for the intelligent integration of Mintek technologies developed to treat highly polluted waste water sites with high uranium concentrates such as Robinson Lake in Randfontein.

Technologies demonstrated included the SAVMIN TM, MetRIX TM, NIC Membrane TM, Biological Oxidation, and Biological Sulfate Reduction.

Made possible by the unique partnership with Sibanye-Stillwater, the showcase created an ideal platform for Mintek and Industry Stakeholders to apply suitable technologies refined to treat the mine-impacted waste water, acid mine drainage and the removal of toxic and radioactive elements such as uranium from the lake sediments to minimise the environmental impact of mining and mining legacies for the treatment of solid and liquid mine effluent.

Speaking to delegates, Mintek Board Chairperson, Dickson Masemola said, “The Mintek board would like to ensure that through innovation and metallurgical responsibilities, Mintek contributes to the development of the economy.”

He further said “It is important for us Mintek as an organisation working together with the mines to strengthen our relations going forward those areas which have been long impacted by mining activities do get the appropriate responses.”

Masemola was joined by some of his colleague from the Board and Mintek Executive as well as guests from the Chamber of Mines, Government and State Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
