:: Merging of Two Anglo Research Facilities

The merger of Anglo American Research Laboratories (Crown Mines) and the Anglo Platinum Research Centre (Germiston) took place on 1 October and the division will now be known as Anglo Research.

The merging of the two facilities brings together a team of experts in the fields of process development, research, and analytical services which will provide Group operations with enhanced value adding solutions. Anglo Research is managed by the Head of Research, Patrick Lowery, who has extensive experience in the gold, uranium, diamond and base metal fields. He is ably assisted by a management team comprising expertise from both campuses.

Existing capabilities now available to the wider Group include dewatering which has been developed at the Crown Mines campus and pyrometallurgy which is an existing capability at the Germiston campus. In addition, of increasing interest is the technology scanning service to identify emerging technologies of relevance to our business. A Head of Chemistry has been appointed to manage all aspects of chemistry on both sites and co-ordinate the merging of the facilities which exist on both sites. Previously Ore Characterisation on the Crown Mines campus had been a section within Mineral Processing and this has now been separated into a new department.

Both sites have always offered comprehensive state-of-the-art mineralogical services and the combined capability of both sites represents a large proportion of the world's scanning electron microscopy capability.

Operations will continue on both campuses until the consolidation of the two entities is completed and the Germiston staff and equipment are relocated to the Crown Mines campus. The necessary alterations and expansion of the Crown Mines site will be completed by the end of 2006. Contact details for both sites remain unchanged at present.
