BUMA-V: Beginnings of the Use of Metals and Alloys
April 21-24, 2002, Gyeongju, Korea

This conference was held in the suburb of Gyeongju, Korea; about 70 participants took part. The conference was organized by the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials and the Division of Materials Education and Research of Seoul National University.

The conference brought together archaeologists, metallurgists, museum curators, and others interested in archeometallurgy the science of studying the ancient metallic artifacts and slags to try to elucidate the date and method of manufacture. Thanks to Prof. Tsun Ko of Beijing Science and Technology University and Prof. Robert Maddin of the Pennsylvania in USA who were collaborating since 1979 in this area and were instrumental in creating these conferences. Forty nine papers were presented and in this conference. Copies of the proceedings volume were made available to the participants.

The conference included also visit to the National Historical Museum in Gyeongju, receptions, and a banquet in which Korean traditional dances and music were performed. Everybody enjoyed the Korean hospitality thanks to Dr. Kyung-Woo Yi of Seoul National University who devoted a great deal of his time in making the necessary arrangements. Next conference is planned to take place in China in 2005.
