The Annual Meeting of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration known as SME was held at the Convention Center in Saint Louis, Missouri on March 26-29, 2006 jointly with the International Conference on Acid Rock Drainage.
Participants were about 2500, mainly from USA and Canada but also few from Australia, South Africa, Peru, Brazil, Chile. Ecuador, Mexico, Switzerland, Germany, France, UK, Sweden, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Finland, Norway, Romania, Spain, Denmark, Tanzania, and Ghana. The exhibits were 221. Events before the conference were:

March 25-26 - Short courses on Mine Drainage, Mine Waste closure, New Belt Conveyor Design
March 26 - Afternoon: Educators Forum; Evening: Opening Reception
The conference started on March 27 in the morning by the Keynote Session entitled "Strategies for Boom or Bust Periods". This was devoted to managing mining companies, ensuring adequate supply of mining and process equipment, attracting and keeping human resources, and financing new mining projects. This was followed by the opening of the exhibition and the welcome luncheon. Besides the regular technical session there were also the memorial lectures honouring Gaudin, Richards, Dreyer, Jackling, and Wadsworth. Papers presented at the meeting were available on a CD and given to participants. Field trips were available on March 30. A unique feature of SME meetings is the International Session where papers outlining experiences in foreign countries by geologists, mining and metallurgical engineers are discussed.
The conference was very well organized. Next meeting will be in Denver, Colorado February 25-28, 2007.
