XVI International Extractive Metallurgy Conference
Saltillo, Mexico, April 24-28, 2006

This conference is the annual event organized by Mexican metallurgists. It originated by the metallurgy professors at the University of Sonora in Hermosillo in 1990 where the first conference took place. Now it moves in different Mexican cities coming back to Hermosillo every two years. The present conference took place at Hotel Quinta Dorada in Saltillo and was organized by Alejandro Uribe (chairman) and Fabiola Nava Alonso of the Research Center for Graduate Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute known by the acronym CINVETSTAV, and Raul Carillo and Antonio Martinez of the Autonomous University of Coahuila, all in Saltillo.

The conference opened by speeches of officials from the Mexican National Research Council and other Government organizations who sponsored this event. A plenary lecture by an invited speaker was given each morning followed by short presentation by academic and industrial researchers. Every evening there was a 3 hour short course on topics such as image analysis, treatment of mining effluents, and air dispersion in industrial flotation. There was a poster session on the first day of the conference and a farewell dinner on the last day. Each participant got a CD of the proceedings; a proceedings volume is also planned. Number of participants was 75 mainly from Mexico but also from Brazil, Cuba, and Guatemala. Plenary lectures were given by four Canadians since there was a close collaboration between CINVETSTAV and Canada.

The conference was a great success; it was well organized thanks to the large number of students volunteer, and certainly it has contributed to the better understanding among researchers and industrial workers.
