The First International Metallurgy Conference
Lima, Peru, October 26-27, 2012

The First International Extractive Metallurgy Conference was held in Sheraton Hotel in Lima and was organized by InterMet Consultants. About 420 delegates took part mainly from South and Central America. Short courses on the extractive metallurgy of copper, extractive metallurgy of gold, pyrometallurgy, and mineral processing were organized before the conference and attracted about 40 participants per course.

The organizers proceeded in a unique way. They invited 17 speakers who delivered a total of 38 lectures each 30 minutes long. The speakers were as follows: 4 from Canada, 3 from USA, 4 from Chile, and the remaining 6 from Peru.

The conference included a reception with Peruvian folk dances and Pisco Sauer drinks. There was simultaneous translation so there were many questions to the speakers. The attendants were highly enthusiastic and showed much interest. InterMet is a consulting firm in Lima directed by Alfredo Olaya, a metallurgical engineer who was awarded a M.Sc. degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The conference was well planed and well organized. Participants received a CD for the presentations. Next conference has been scheduled for November 2013. Sincere congratulations to the Organizing Committee.
