The Hydrocyclones '03 conference held at the Mount Nelson Hotel, Cape Town, proved to be uniquely useful to those who attended. More than 50 world experts from a variety of sectors came together to discuss a common but specialized interest - the advancement and applications of hydrocyclone technology. The Cape Town conference featured quality presentations and stimulated open discussions that will almost certainly result in productive future collaborations.

Much of the credit for the success of Hydrocyclones '03 must go to the organizers for creating an exceptionally conducive environment. The mix of knowledgeable attendees ensured many excellent opportunities for cross-fertilization of ideas. Participants included industry representatives from the processing, oil production, and marine shipping industries, as well as scientists and engineers from universities and government institutions. Also, the conference program was structured in a series of plenary sessions. Attendees were thus able to take part in all of the sessions, something that is impossible when conferences are arranged in parallel sessions. In the resulting exchanges of know-how and ideas, an atmosphere of openness soon developed and both presenters and audience members were informed and stimulated. Given this atmosphere, it is no surprise that numerous informal discussions also took place between friendly acquaintances after the daily sessions had been completed.

The organizers are also to be commended for their choice of conference facilities and the other local arrangements, all of which were instrumental in making Hydrocyclones '03 the success that it was. I know that I am not alone in expressing my gratitude for having had the opportunity to attend, and I hope that future conferences prove equally successful.
