A member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,100 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health, and matter. All research is conducted in close collaboration with other members of the Helmholtz Association as well as with universities, non-university affiliated research institutes, and industry.

The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg of Resource Technology invites applications as PhD student (m/f)

The position will be available from 01 November 2017. The employment contract is limited to three years. The regular weekly working time will be 39 hours. The salary is based on the collective agreement TVöD-Bund. The place of work is Freiberg.

Requirements:

  • very good Master of Science or equivalent in the fields of chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, process engineering or similar
  • striving towards PhD in the field chemical engineering (especially particle technology or interface process engineering)
  • curiosness, interest in scientific questions, experimental talent, transferring experimental results into models
  • very good oral and written English skills
  • fundamental German knowledge on a communication level
  • willingness to publish in papers and on national and international conferences

Tasks:

  • working independently on the project “MultiDimFlot” as part of a priority program “MerhDimPart” of the German Research Foundation DFG SPP 2045
  • setting up and investigating a novel flotation apparatus for the separation of very fine particles with the properties of size, shape and wettability
  • fundamental investigations of the separation mechanisms in a turbulent stirred suspension phase and in froths
  • preparation of particles and surface functionalization in chemistry lab
  • working with a bottom driven flotation cell
  • interface analytics with contour analyses and bubble pressure tensiometry
  • particle characterization with laser diffraction, SEM-EDX, inverse gas chromatography, AFM and Raman spectroscopy
  • image analysis of bubbles and froths
