:: Vaalkrantz Commissioned

Dowding, Reynard & Associates (DRA) has completed the design and construction of the Vaalkrantz coal plant, near Vryheid in KwaZulu Natal. The plant, commissioned in September this year, processes 100 tph of raw coal to produce numerous washed and sized products for sale to the inland anthracite market.

DRA, backed by AngloCoal, undertook to finance the project until promised investment was in place and immediately proceeded with the design of the plant, which essentially consisted of one ROM crushing high gravity dense media module, one coarse low gravity module, one fine low gravity module, spirals and product screening. In addition, half way through civil construction, DRA had to support the plant with concrete rafts to accommodate poor soil conditions. The value of the project was just under R40 million.

Operation of the plant has been handed to Minopex and under its management, production currently exceeds design capability. Minopex specialises in outsourced operations and maintenance of mineral processing plants. Its teams operate to international (ISO and NOSA) standards and all services are tailored to suit the requirements of each client. In line with BEE requirements, the entire operating team at Vaalkrantz is made up of previously disadvantaged individuals.
