:: Outokumpu's Technology for IFM's Ferrochrome Plant in South Africa

Outokumpu Technology has been awarded a contract to supply technology for a new pelletizing and sintering plant to be built for International Ferro Metals' (IFM) new ferrochrome plant in South Africa. The total contract value is some EUR 40 million, of which Outokumpu Technology's scope of supply is about EUR 14,5 million.

The new plant will be built in collaboration with Bateman Engineering, which is the main contractor. Outokumpu Technology will supply the core pelletizing and sintering technology consisting of the basic engineering and supply of key equipment. The scope also covers the supervision of installation and start-up of the plant as well as training of the operating personnel.

The preliminary-design phase of the project has already been commenced and Outokumpu Technology will be providing the balancing technology. The goal is to have the plant built within 17 months, after which it will produce 400 000 tonnes of sintered-chromite pellets per year.

Outokumpu's ferrochrome process is known as the most profitable ferrochrome production concept, due to its high capacity, low costs and friendliness to the environment. This project is already the seventh delivery of this respective technology to South Africa alone, which proves Outokumpu Technology's position as one of the leading ferrous technology suppliers.
