:: Outokumpu Technology Awarded Contract for a New Copper Smelter in Zambia

Outokumpu Technology will design and deliver a new copper flash smelting plant to be built for Konkola Copper Mines Plc. (KCM) in Zambia. The contract value is about EUR 20 million. This is already the fifth flash smelting license Outokumpu Technology has sold in six months time.

The new smelter will use Zambian concentrates, mainly from KCM?s own mines, as raw material to produce 300,000 tonnes copper per year. The commissioning of the new smelter is scheduled for 2007.

Outokumpu Technology's scope of supply covers flash smelting license, basic engineering for the whole smelter including drying, flash smelting, slag cleaning and also cobalt recovery system as well as process gas cleaning, delivery of proprietary equipment for an advanced direct-to-blister flash smelting furnace and a TM-16 anode casting shop.

"We have continuously developed the flash smelting technology to reduce process steps and improve environmental and safety performance of the smelters. The Direct-to-Blister technology, currently used in two smelters in Poland and Australia, and now designed for this Zambian smelter, eliminates converting and thus molten metal transports in a smelter", explains Tapani Järvinen, President & CEO of Outokumpu Technology, and concludes: "This deal shows that flash smelting is clearly the leading and the most economical technology for copper smelting plants".
