:: DRA to Design Four Additional Zambian Copper Recovery Plants
DRA Mineral Projects has been awarded three additional Copper SX-EW (solvent extraction and electrowinning) projects for Mopani Copper Mine Kitwe, Zambia, and one Copper SX-EW project for Metorex's Sable Zinc plantin Kabwe. All four plants are presently under construction and contractualcompletion is planned for mid-2006.

The Mopani contracts were awarded in the middle of last year (2005) on the basis of the successful commissioning in 2004 of a DRA designed and constructed copper recovery plant in Mufulira, about 50 km north of Kitwe. This plant recovers copper from an in situ leach operation and produces LME Grade 'A', or equivalent, cathode copper using solvent extraction and electrowinning technology (SX-EW).
The SX-EW 2 plant is similar to the first; a modern design minimising consumption of reagents, utilities and consumables. The plant is designed to produce 17 500 tpa of copper and uses four mixer/settler units,operating in a two extract and one strip arrangement to give an in-built flexibility for handling higher-than-design copper concentrate solutions. Electrowinning takes place in the No 3 electro-refinery (ER), an existing tank house facility.
Scope of work included engineering design, procurement, construction, commissioning and project management. It also included an electrolyte system combined with multimedia filtration, heat recovery, crud treatment system with agitated tank, and dilutent storage tank. Feed to the SX plant has a grade of approximately 4 g/l to 5 g/l copper, and raffinate is returned to the leaching section.
DRA conducted comprehensive training of the operating team to ensure a smooth hand-over.
The copper SX-EW project at the Metorex Sable Zinc Plant will extract copper from the concentrate that Metorex will transport from its concentrate plant at Ruashi in the Congo.
