:: Bateman Wins Big Piece of $408m Lumwana Copper Project

South African-linked project house Bateman Engineering announced that its joint venture with Ausenco Limited had signed the final engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts with Equinox Minerals for the development of the Lumwana copper project in Zambia.

The Lumwana copper/cobalt project is regarded as one of the largest of its kind ever undertaken on the African continent.

Located in the North-Western province of Zambia, 220 km north-west of the Copperbelt and 65 km from the provincial capital of Solwezi, the Lumwana tenement covers 1 355 km2 and includes two major deposits Malundwe and Chimiwungo which together represent the largest known Zambian copper resource outside of the Copperbelt.

Commenting on the contract, Bateman Engineering CEO Dr Sivi Gounden said that the award underscored the company’s central role in the development of mining resources in Central Africa and, in particular, on the Copperbelt. "The Lumwana copper project is one of the biggest copper developments currently under way, and should provide Bateman with an excellent reference site for further work in the copper industry," Gounden said.
