:: Bateman BQR Flotation Cells for Smokey Hills and Blue Ridge Platinum Projects

Bateman BQR Flotation Cell technology continues to be in demand from an increasing range of international minerals processing projects and clients, with recent orders from the Blue Ridge and Smokey Hills platinum projects in South Africa. In addition, flotation circuits for Hindustan Zinc Limited in India, the African Copper Plc - Mowana Copper mine in Botswana, and the SOMISY SA - Syama gold mine in south-east Mali have been successfully completed.

The contract for the flotation circuit for the Smokey Hills platinum project was awarded to Bateman Engineered Technologies (part of the Bateman Engineering Group) by GRD Minproc. The circuit consists of a total of six banks of flotation cells comprising eight Bateman BQR200 Flotation Cells for primary and secondary roughing, four Bateman BQR100 Flotation Cells for scavenging and 13 Bateman BQR50 Flotation Cells for cleaning and re-cleaning. The flotation circuit was supplied complete with all interconnecting piping walkways and blowers.

The Smokey Hills project in Mpumalanga, owned by Platinum Australia, is located on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex, and has a plant design capacity of 97,000 oz/yr of three platinum-group metals and gold.

The Blue Ridge Platinum Concentrator for Ridge Mining in Groblersdal has two circuits of Bateman BQR Flotation Cells: a primary and secondary circuit. The primary circuit consists of seven Bateman BQR300 Flotation Cells for roughing and eight Bateman BQR100 Flotation Cells for cleaning and re-cleaning. The secondary circuit is made up of eight Bateman BQR500 Flotation Cells for roughing and 11 Bateman BQR100 Flotation Cells for cleaning and recleaning.

Bateman Engineering Projects was also awarded the overall US$59 million lump sum turnkey project to construct the concentrator, and conducted the pre-feasibility study as well as the full feasibility study for this plant, which is targeting 125,000 oz/yr of platinum group metals.

The plant treats UG2 type material from underground using a flow sheet in which the fine product, following primary milling, is fed to the primary rougher, cleaner, recleaner flotation circuit. From here the concentrate is collected for filtration and shipping to a toll facility, while the primary flotation tailings are dewatered, classified using hydrocyclones and then fed to a secondary mill to achieve a fine grind. The mill product feeds the secondary flotation circuit where the concentrate is jointly filtered with the primary concentrate ready for shipment and the tailings are discarded.

Ranging in size from 0.5 m3 (BQR5) to 150 m3 (BQR1500), the Bateman BQR Flotation Cells are used in roughing, scavenging, cleaning and re-cleaning, unit and pilot cell applications to process gold, copper, zinc, platinum group metals, phosphates, graphite slag and a range of other minerals and commodities.

The Bateman BQR range of round tank flotation cells is available globally either via Bateman Engineered Technologies, or from the Delkor Group of Companies in North, South and Central America, Europe, India, Australasia and the Far East.
