:: New Gems Plant Exceeds Targeted 35,000ct in First Month of Operation

The Koidu diamond mine, in Sierra Leone, has exceeded expectations by producing over 35 000 ct in the first month’s operation of its new 180 t/h dense-media separation (DMS) processing plant. The DMS plant is part of Octéa’s long-term strategy in the country, where the expansion project brings the total investment to $300-million.

The mine is situated near the town of Koidu, in the Kono district of eastern Sierra Leone, and about 360 km from the capital, Freetown. The mining lease located within the Tankoro chiefdom, measures about 4.9 km2 and hosts two kimberlite pipes and four kimberlite dyke zones, along which four small blows, or enlargements, have been discovered. It began producing in 2004 and now employs over 2 500 people, 90% of them Sierra Leonean.
