:: Afcan Granted Phosphate Permit in Burkina Faso

Afcan Mining Corp. has been granted a phosphate prospecting permit for the Kodjari property in Burkina Faso. The three-year permit covers an area of 108 km2 in the far southeast of the country, near the border with Benin. The deposit was discovered 20 years ago, and a resource of 65 Mt has been evaluated at an average grade of 28% P2O5.

Development has been hindered by the government's ban on the import of sulphuric acid, which is necessary to transform the phosphate ore into a commercial fertiliser. However, in October 2000, MetChem, a Canadian engineering company, completed a conceptual study for Afcan that demonstrated the practicality of deriving local sulphuric acid from the roasting of sphalerite. Afcan now proposes to evaluate the suitability of the phosphate to sustain an integrated fertiliser complex in Burkina Faso.
