:: US$160 Million Approved for Tarkwa Expansion

Gold Fields is to build a 4.2 Mt/y mill and carbon-in-leach plant at its Tarkwa gold mine in Ghana. The new facilities, which will operate in parallel with the existing 15 Mt/y heap leach plant, will increase annual gold production from the current 525 000 ounces to over 700 000 ounces. Total open-pit mining rates will increase to between 50 and 60 Mt/y. The mill is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2004.
