:: First Quantum: Results from Kansanshi Engineering Study

First Quantum Minerals has announced an updated resource calculation of 73 Mt grading 1.74% copper and 0.27 g/t gold for the first phase of its 80%-owned Kansanshi copper-gold project in Zambia. The first 11 years of operation will focus on shallow oxide and mixed ores, with copper cathode production from a SX/EW facility. Copper in concentrate, comprising 40% of the total output during this phase, will be processed by existing Copperbelt smelters. Average annual copper production during this period is estimated at 94 kt. During the second phase, sulphide ores will be mined. A definitive feasibility study is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2002, and the company anticipates that construction could start late in 2002, with the first commercial production early in 2004.
