:: Pechiney Smelter Plans Advance

French-based aluminium producer Pechiney has signed a multi-year energy contract with South African electricity supplier Eskom. The electricity would power the 460, 000 t/y aluminium smelter that Pechiney is considering building at the new deep water port of Coega on the Indian Ocean, near Port Elizabeth.

According to Pechiney, the agreement is a very significant step in the process of establishing an aluminium smelter at Coega and opens the road for further discussion with the South African Government, potential partners and local communities before a final go-ahead can be given. Pechiney says that it is also continuing discussions over potential locations in a number of other countries. However, it appears that the only other likely location is at Aldoga near Gladstone in Queensland.

Analysts expect that Pechiney will make its final decision within the next six months.
