:: Eskom Considers Smelter Investment

South Africa's energy parastatal Eskom has said it would consider investing in a R400 million silicon smelter project at Saldanha in the Western Cape province. A memorandum of understanding on the project, which would involve the Industrial Development Corporation, Italian silicon company Novamet and South African smelting technology specialists Pyromet, has been signed and a prefeasibility study is under way. The smelter, which will process silica mined at Van Ryndorp north of Saldanha, would have an initial capacity of 23 kt/y, rising to 50 kt/y.
