:: Zimplats Outlines its Plans

Platinum-group metals producer Zimplats says it has identified opportunities for expansion that could increase production from current levels of 200 000 oz/y of precious metals to 600 000 oz/y. If operations at the Makwiro [Ngezi] mine were extended to include underground reserves, a concentrator could be built at Ngezi, thus freeing the concentrator at the Selous Metallurgical Complex (SMC) for processing ore from Hartley platinum mine, which is currently on care-and-maintenance. Production at Ngezi-SMC started in December 2001, and the first concentrates were transported to Impala Refining Services in South Africa in January 2002.
