:: Hillside Expansion Project Fully Commissioned

BHP Billiton has announced that the expansion project at its wholly owned subsidiary Hillside Aluminium smelter at Richards Bay reached full commissioning on 7 December 2003.

Approved in February 2002, the expansion of 132 000 tons per annum, has raised Hillside’s production to 670 000 tons per annum of primary ingots, rim alloy and t-bars. Full production at the potline has been achieved in record time with construction to pot commissioning taking just over twenty months. The total cost to completion is expected to be below the original budget of US$449 million.

Mike Salamon, Executive Director and President of Aluminium at BHP Billiton, said: “The Hillside 3 expansion project, like BHP Billiton’s other southern African aluminium smelter projects before it, has been completed in record time and with an excellent safety performance. I am pleased to note this has been achieved with cross smelter teamwork by our experienced people at our Hillside, Mozal and Bayside aluminium smelters. I congratulate the Hillside project and operations teams for this remarkable performance."
