:: Minopex To Manage Letseng Processing Facility

Minopex has been awarded the contract for the management, operation and maintenance of the processing facility at Letseng diamond mine in Lesotho. The mine, though small by international standards, will increase Lesotho’s exports by 10% and make a significant difference to the country’s GDP. DRA (Dowding, Reynard and Associates) was responsible for designing and building the plant.

The Letseng deposit consists of a main pipe and a satellite pipe. The company, controlled by Letseng Holdings SA (76%) and the government of Lesotho (24%), will mine both pipes. The satellite pipe will be mined over the first five years and the main pipe will be mined later. Mine management predicts that when the mine is in full production 15% of the stones recovered each year will be greater than 10 carats, 10% greater than 20 carats and 1.5% greater than 100 carats, translating to 1 100 carats a year. DRA, was responsible for designing and building the 350t/h DMS (dense medium separation) plant, which Minopex operates 24x7. It is fully enclosed to accommodate the extreme weather conditions prevalent on the Maluti mountain range. The plant complex includes primary crushing and scrubbing, secondary crushing and re-crushing, 800mm cyclones, wet x-ray recovery and integrated workshops and stores.
