:: Newmont Operations in Indonesia

An article 'Newmont: a major player in Indonesia' in the March 2002 issue of Engineering & Mining Journal, describes the operation of two mines in Indonesia- Batu Hijau and Minahasa. The former, Cu-Au mine, started up in late 1999 and now ranks among the world's largest Cu mines. The Minahasa Au mine began production in 1996, and mining completed in late 2001. Some lower-grade stockpiles remain to be processed and closure is anticipated in late 2003.

Processing of the Batu Hijau ore is unique in that seawater is utilised for Cu/Au rougher flotation. Seawater flotation allows for maximum rougher metal recovery, while reducing reagent needs.
