:: Falconbridge Reopens Dominican Ferronickel Complex

Canadian nickel producer Falconbridge Ltd. said on Monday it had restarted its Falcondo ferronickel mine and refining complex in the Dominican Republic, as planned, after a three-month shutdown.

The company lowered its 2001 output for Falcondo to 21,000 tonnes in October from 29,000 tonnes because of the shutdown, which was blamed on high energy prices and poor demand for ferronickel. The mining complex, located at Bonao, 80 km (50 miles) north of the capital Santo Domingo, was closed at the end of October. But the company said in the light of an improved market and lower oil prices, it would restart Falcondo on Jan. 27, which has a 200-megawatt power plant on site.
