:: Lac des Iles Problems Addressed

Toronto-based North American Palladium Ltd has begun to implement a plan to resolve operational problems associated with its newly-constructed 15,000 t/d concentrator at the Lac des Iles platinum group metals mine in Ontario. The company completed the project last year, but throughput has been disappointing, caused by difficulties with the refurbished pebble crusher, unanticipated constraints with the flotation cleaner circuit, and the inability of the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill to operate at the design rate.

A new, larger pebble crusher was acquired and installed during October last year, resulting in finer material being fed to the SAG mill. This, together with modifications to the grinding and flotation circuits, has improved mill throughput and recoveries. However, in the long term the company recognises that a secondary crushing circuit is needed, as well as modifications to the grinding circuit and possibly expansion of the flotation circuit.
