:: Proven Performance Wins $A19m Telfer Technology Package for Outokumpu
Outokumpu will begin deliveries late this year of the first of 60 flotation cells being built as part of a major order won to supply a package of technologies to Newcrest Mining’s Telfer gold and copper project in Western Australia.
The Australian-manufactured flotation cells including Tankcells®, U-shaped cells and Flash Flotation cells® designed to maximise gold recoveries are part of more than $A19 million worth of equipment that Outokumpu will supply to the Telfer project, which will be one of the world’s major gold-producing concentrators.
After project completion scheduled for the last quarter of 2004, Telfer will treat 17-19 million tonnes of rock a year to recover 770,000 ounces of gold and about 27,000 tonnes of copper.
Outokumpu says its new order is the result of global technology leadership coupled with local expertise - “Winning the $A15 Million flotation cell order at Telfer, then going on to successfully bid for the $A4.0 million thickener package, follows previous successful partnerships with Newcrest, including the introduction of advanced technologies at Cadia and Ridgeway mines," says the Systems Sales Manger Mineral Processing, for Outokumpu, Mr Andrew Okely. “Winning this technology package is a very satisfying endorsement of Outokumpu’s performance as a technology supplier over many years."
Mr Okely says the flotation cells, being manufactured in Perth by J.V. Engineering Pty Ltd, will be progressively delivered from late this year through to April 2004.
Deliveries of the flotation cells will be complemented by the manufacture, also in Australia, of thickener equipment designed in this country for worldwide application.
The Australian-engineered family of high-torque, low-maintenance thickener drives to be used at Telfer is especially designed for the larger types of thickeners now being used in mineral processing.
The SCD (Supaflo® Column Drive) family of rake drives and lifting devices is custom-built for thickeners in excess of 40 metres diameter to achieve higher production efficiencies, including minimising tailings volumes and maximising water recovery. The SCD family, which has already been exported to Africa, is designed to set new industry standards in design and performance, including such areas as torque ratings, design innovation, ease of manufacture, ease of maintenance and prime cost.
"Advanced technology, high recovery rates and low maintenance were all important to the Telfer project, which was originally suspended in 2000 due to rising costs, then revitalised after a feasibility study showed how the resource could be economically developed," said Mr Okely
"Outokumpu’s technology and proven performance are very much a part of this revitalisation. We will be building on our ongoing and expanding relationship with Newcrest to offer advanced technologies throughout the Telfer project."
