:: Mark F. Vancas, 1947-2017

It is with much regret that we advise of the recent passing of Mark F Vancas after a brave struggle with cancer. Mark will be remembered by many in the mining industry as a great pioneer of Solvent Extraction and Electrowinning for copper and other base metals.

Mark graduated in 1970 with a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arizona. He spent the first 17 years of his career in operations and later process design at Magma Copper. He moved on to Bateman Engineering at the inception of their work with solvent extraction. He was the inventor of the BATEMAN SETTLERTM and a major contributor to the development of other SX technologies including permanent cathodes and the TT mixing system. For 28 years Mark was a leading member of most of what are now Tenova Advanced Technologies’ SXEW project teams. Mark has his fingerprints on many solvent extraction projects in almost every country, from Australia to Zimbabwe via Chile, Israel, Mexico, Peru, Russia and many more points in between.

Mark was an excellent senior engineer, sharing his knowledge and expertise generously and clearly with his engineering colleagues. Many a junior engineer has explained a design tweak as “because MFV said so”. He was the go-to address for all manner of enquiries from junior engineers, experienced engineers and senior managers alike.

Mark also had a great presence in the mining conference community. He delivered over 15 papers and presentations and was well known at ALTA, ISEC, Randol, AIME and Copper/Cobre.

We bid farewell to a consummate professional and wise and generous colleague and a wonderful man. May he rest in peace and may his family find solace in this time of loss.
