:: Snider Elected President and COO of Phelps Dodge Corporation

The Board of Directors of Phelps Dodge Corporation (NYSE: PD) today announced the election of Timothy R. Snider, 53, to the position of president and chief operating officer of the company effective November 1, 2003. Snider will retain his position as president of Phelps Dodge Mining Company, the corporation’s mining and metals division. J. Steven Whisler, 48, current chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of the company, will retain the positions of chairman and chief executive officer.

Whisler said, "During the past three years, we have relentlessly driven our comprehensive enterprise performance system, Quest for Zero, to improve our operating performance. That effort has been very successful, and much of the credit for its success belongs to Tim. We also are a substantially larger and more complex company and have a number of exciting growth projects. This promotion will allow Tim to undertake increased operating responsibilities while we continue to concentrate on the continued strategic growth of our businesses."

Snider joined Phelps Dodge in 1970 at the company’s copper operations in Bisbee, Ariz., and has held positions of increasing responsibility both in the United States and South America. He was instrumental in the development and implementation of solution extraction/electrowinning technology, which has become a major competitive advantage for Phelps Dodge’s mining operations. Snider was elected president of Phelps Dodge Mining Company and a senior vice president of Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1998. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and geology from Northern Arizona University in 1979 and completed the advanced management program of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1996.
