:: SA Equipment in Innovative Application  

A Zambian company has reduced its capital equipment requirements as a result of the innovative application of an impactor and screen from IMS Engineering. The company using the equipment is JV Civils of Kitwe.

The company was awarded a contract by Mopani Copper Mine's Mufulira mine to crush copper slag for ball mill feed preparation. The copper slag is hard and brittle and is high in silica and therefore extremely abrasive. IMS Engineering was able to show that because the material is so brittle, it reduces quickly with the high impact energy applied to it by the Hazemag AP-K 1313 hard rock impactor. The downstream benefit is that with only one crushing stage IV Civils can maximise the fine material required in a single pass with the minimum of material recirculation. The expected maximum feed size to the impactor will be minus 200 mm with the impactor being fed at a rate of 100 t/h.

The double-deck linear motion 592 x 1292 OmniScreen supplied to JV Civils is being used in closed circuit with the impactor to remove the ball mill feed product while simultaneously acting as the impactor's feeder, feeding the oversize to the unit and distributing the feed evenly over the full width of the impactor's rotor.

This dual purpose performed by the OmniScreen eliminates the need for extra conveyors and a feeder and thus provides a further saving in the overall capital cost for this project. The OmniScreen, due to its linear motion, is operating horizontally which simplifies the installation further.
