:: Outokumpu’s Australian- Engineered Thickener Drives Set World Standards

An Australian-engineered family of high-torque, low-maintenance thickener drives for the larger types of thickeners being used in mineral processing has been introduced by Outokumpu Technology Pty Ltd for applications worldwide.

The Australian-engineered Outokumpu drive being readied for delivery to the Skorpion project in Namibia

Outokumpu’s Regional Manager Thickeners, Mr Brad Garraway, says the SCD family is designed to set new industry standards in design and performance, including such areas as torque ratings, design innovation, ease of manufacture, ease of maintenance and prime cost.

“The first SCD drive was successfully tested earlier this year and exported to the Skorpion project in Namibia. Designed in Australia for ease of manufacture and ease of installation globally the new family of drives feature advanced technology developed in Australia, drawing on the global experience of Outokumpu operations spanning 30 countries. The resulting drive is truly a world class product," he said.

Suitable for use with the latest high efficiency thickening equipment - including Supaflo® High Compression Paste thickeners from Outokumpu - the SCD family is available with torque capacities up to 6,500 kNm.

Design features include:

  • Commercial one-piece ring gear and bearing
  • Oil bath lubrication of gear and bearing
  • Splined drive from reducer to pinion
  • Self-aligning lower pinion bearing for long life
  • Hydraulic drive for load balancing between pinions
  • Fabricated base housing designed by Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Another feature is the complementary rake lifting device with travel of up to 1200mm. Torque reaction from the drive is transmitted through slide plates onto guides attached to the extended centre column. These long-life devices require no lubrication and are easily replaced.

From its bases in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, Outokumpu Technology Pty Ltd operates throughout Australasia and the Asia-Pacific as part of the global Outokumpu Technology organisation employing more than 1600 people. Internationally, Outokumpu markets plants and processes, supplies special equipment and provides full engineering and project management services for mining and metallurgical industries, as well as for chemical and selected other process industries where Outokumpu processes and equipment are the major components. The Australian and Asia-Pacific operation specialises in thickening, flotation, filtration, automation and physical separation technologies characterised by performance, flexibility, a high degree of automation, low energy consumption, and environmental responsibility. Typical Outokumpu Supaflo® Thickener applications include tailings, CCD circuits, cyanide recovery circuits, soda ash slimes, paste backfill, potash slimes, silica sand and fine coal
