:: ABB to Supply Three HPGR Drive Systems for Spinifex Ridge Project

Thyssen Krupp Polysius and ABB cooperate to increase Australian Moly Mines’ molybdenum and copper concentrate production.

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today that it has won a contract to provide three high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) drive systems (each with a power of 2 x 2650kW) for the grinding operation of the Moly Mines Spinifex Ridges project in western Australia. Each unit consists of two converter transformers, two ACS1000 drives and two squirrel cage induction motors.

Moly Mines awarded Thyssen Krupp Polysius the contract to supply the key equipment for the crushing & grinding circuit. The decision was made to cooperate with ABB and gain from their expertise and experiences in regard to the HPGR drive systems. The Moly Mines molybdenum and copper mine is located 50km north-east of Marble Bar in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Once operational, the 20’000’000 tonnes/annum production plant will be Australia’s first and worldwide one of the largest molybdenum and copper projects.

Today, HPGRs in the minerals as well as in the cement industry are often driven by variable speed drive systems that provide operational flexibility and are thus ideal for processing of inhomogeneous types of ore and for variable throughput rates. The turn down ratio with such HPGR drive systems can be as high as 50% and more.

The process of high-pressure grinding by means of an HPGR involves material being crushed at high pressure conditions between two counter rotating rollers. The applied pressure can achieve more than 180 bar. The extreme pressure causes the rocks to fracture into fine particles. By the nature of HPGR drive systems, high dynamics and strong mechanical characteristics are required in order to make it possible to sustain the heavy loads on the mechanics, which can reach short term overload conditions up to 180% for 500ms.

Compared to conventional semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills, HPGRs significantly improve throughput rates and energy efficiency.

By providing sustainable solutions for HPGR applications ABB has set the standard in the minerals and cement industries. Plants such as CVRD San Luis, Cerro Verde and Boddington, have been successfully operating with Polysius HPGR applications for several years.

The Spinifex Ridge project has a resource of 658 million tonnes of molybdenum and copper. It is expected to produce about 10'800 tonnes of molybdenum concentrate and 12’200 tonnes of copper concentrate per year for more than 20 years. Molybdenum is a metallic element which withstands extreme temperatures without significantly expanding or softening. It is used largely in the stainless and specialty steels industries and in other applications that involve intense heat, including pipelines, aircraft parts, electrical contacts, semiconductors and motors.
