![]() :: Large Potash Deposit Found in UK As potash is a key ingredient in fertiliser, demand has grown with the soaring population growth. The price of potash has trebled in the past decade and mining companies are investing heavily in the sector. Most developments have been in Russia and Canada, but Sirius Minerals (siriusminerals.com) has announced the discovery of a vast quantity of potash between Whitby and Scarborough on the UK's east coast. Sirius plans further test drilling and hopes to start building its mine within the next 2 years, employing around 1000 people. The company must, however, overcome environmental concerns as the deposit is located in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Sirius plans to build an underground mine and will transport the ore to a Teeside processor by tunnel.
