Postdoctoral Research Associate in Electrokinetics  [December 13, 2021]

Location: University of Exeter, Penryn, Cornwall, UK

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr Rich Crane. This Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded post participates in the Large Consortium Grant: Philippines Remediation of Mine Tailings (PROMT).

Traditional mining and mineral processing technologies consume large quantities of fresh water, produce carbon dioxide, can contaminate water, and compete with local communities for resources. They also produce large amounts of mine waste; uneconomic rock, and wet slurries of finely-ground mine tailings. These are deposited behind constructed dams as tailings storage facilities. Tailings storage facilities pose environmental hazards, where failure could cause contaminated materials to be released affecting people and ecosystems. The risk of failure is increased in the Philippines due to the rugged topography, high rainfall, and frequent earthquakes.

This project will comprise a coordinated approach towards the development of new technology for the in situ remediation of mine tailings in the Philippines. The overarching vision of PROMT is to foster next generation processes for the application of novel solvents (including organic acids and deep eutectic solvents) and real-time geophysical tomography for the in situ leaching of target metals from mine tailings in order to extract value, clean up pollution, and generate soils which support plant growth and allow the land to be reused.

The successful candidate will join this consortium and will lead a research programme which will focus on the development of novel approaches in electrokinetics for the in situ leaching of mine tailings in the Philippines.
